Put To Good Use

March 26, 2018

Functionality (aka FUNctionality) is important to me. Each time I create an item out of clay I think about how it can be utilized. Sure, I want it to look ‘mahvelous’, but how it will be used, where it will be used and reused over and over, is key. Sometimes I’ll tweak a design years later to increase its usefulness.

Here's a sign that Spring is on its way. Look how beautiful these containers look with their colorful abundance of flowers!

As an artist, I’m often swayed by ideas from a purely visual standpoint. And then, the thought, “what can this be used for” will creep into my creative process. Because the medium I use is clay, my natural inclination is to create a vessel that has some sort of purpose. One of my longterm goals is to ditch this absolute requirement and explore more artistic ways to use clay to just create art.

I’ve played a little with this concept from time to time; as I think about it more and more, I’ll be looking for new ways to express my creativity, using clay without any particular function in mind other than visual pleasure. I often buy art purely because it makes me feel good. Now, I’d like to make that kind of art too. What do you think? Do you have any ideas for me? I value your feedback. Work + Play

January 29, 2018

From the outside, my chosen profession looks like fun. I agree. It is lots of fun. But the serious, business side of a creative endeavor exists as well. I think most working artists would agree that the balance between creative work and creativity is a constant juggling act.

This new shape developed from a conversation at this weekend's tray-making party. "Could you make something like your sponge holder, only a little bit bigger to hold a toothbrush and toothpaste?" I couldn't wait to get in the studio yesterday to work out this suggestion. This is the fun part of what I do!

I love making ‘something’ out of clay. It’s my favorite part of the process. When creativity flows, it is empowering and exhilarating. Marketing, public relations, and sales are also crucial skills necessary to attain success. This business prowess requires equal attention, dedication and time.

Customers often give me ideas for ClayByLaura sales opportunities. I always appreciate the suggestions and like to seek out new ways of marketing what I create in the studio. I'll be heading back to Huntsville, Alabama this spring to participate in an annual 3-day arts festival called Panoply. It looks like I've got my work cut out for me! Click on the photo above if you have any ideas for me -- perhaps a new shape or place to sell ClayByLaura. I appreciate your input!
